YMKN Supports Coral Restoration Foundation
Members of Ye Mystic Krewe of the Nautilus traveled to??Key Largo April 14th to participate in the inaugural Coral Restoration Day partnership event between the Coral Restoration Foundation and Rainbow Reef Dive Center. ??The Coral Restoration Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to studying reefs and coral,??developing and implementing methods for restoring the coral reefs, and providing education to the public about coral reef science.
Participants were first provided with an informative marine orientation lecture??by Roxanne Boonstra covering the topics of coral species basics, importance & benefits of coral reefs, threats to reefs, and coral outplanting methodogies. ??Instruction was received on how to clean the “coral trees” in the nursery and how to actually plant the coral.
From the classroom, we headed out Rainbow Reef’s Tropical Voyager to the coral nursery with Jack Fishman and Matz Indergaes. ?? What a fabulous site!!
The next stop was??Pickles 2 Reef to observe the health of staghorn coral that had been planted there by CRF. ??Excitingly, the coral plantings looked quite healthy!
CRF??and Rainbow Reef Dive Center??offer the opportunity to participate in this wonderful educational and restoration activity every 2nd Friday of the month. ??To learn more, please search the links provided through this post and read this article??http://www.alertdiver.com/Restoration_Revolution.
